Many people ask whether our accommodation is an Hotel, Guest House or Bed and Breakfast? The answer is a little more complicated than first thought.
Some say that a hotel differentiates itself by usually being part of a large hotel chain. Although some smaller hotels are family run and their owners usually live elsewhere other than the hotel premises. The usual difference is that they have a specific dining or restaurant facilities for a quality evening meal. But all hotels, guest houses and B&B’s offer at least a continental breakfast with most having the choice of a cooked breakfast. But it’s usually only an hotel where you would expect an evening meal in their restaurant even if it’s only next door, if you’re on a budget.
The Edge Accommodation does not have a restaurant as such but we do have a dining area in the guests lounge for breakfast. We are unusual in that we have an association with several local take-away businesses that will deliver to our premises for guests consume in the dining area or bedroom.
Hotels often have function rooms or meeting rooms that are hired out for Corporate events for Weddings and the like. This is where we overlap into the hotel market as we have a large area complete with tables chairs and a dance floor for this kind of function. It has to be said that the views from this room are stunning as they look out over the Colne Valley from the edge of a high cliff called Longwood Edge. We have had several successful wedding receptions and funeral gatherings where customers have employed outside catering to cover their needs.
We are also similar to hotels in that we have an alcohol licence for a fully functioning bar for our guests and general public. We have a good and varied selection of bottled beer, wine and spirits and of course the worlds friendliest barman called John. So we are not quite a fully functioning hotel, just yet.
A guest house is often classed as a guest house because they have more than three bedrooms available to the public. The term guest house also indicates that the owners also live in part of the house and that their premises are larger than a B&B and that a customer sleeps as a “guest” in their house.
The edge Accommodation is also in this class as we have a total of four bedrooms and can sleep up to ten people in our six beds across four rooms. The very friendly owner also resides in the premises and personally welcomes his guests with afternoon tea and scones. A guest house also employs staff to operate the business as their main source of business income, rather than as a hobby which is often seen in the case of a bed and breakfast establishment.
We are listed as a Guest House in Booking.com with a Superb 9.2/10 rating from 193 trusted reviews. We are a little bit more of a Guest House than just a Bed and Breakfast.
Bed and Breakfast
And finally we are also classed as Bed and Breakfast accommodation because that’s basically what we do. We have moved up the rankings from #6 to #3 of 20 Best Value B&Bs in Huddersfield in Trip Advisor under the heading of “Huddersfield Bed and Breakfasts.” We have received some lovely compliments for our comfortable beds and tasty full English breakfasts. But most of all we are friendly and approachable. Our house rules are flexible and we are open to positive suggestions that will enhance our customer service which in the long term will create many “Happy Guest Returns.”
In the end what does it matter as long as you get a good nights sleep and enjoy our breakfast. Hope to see you soon…
